We have a lot of couples that workout together at the gym. We have a lot of couples that have MET at the gym! We have a lot of people that workout at the gym, but their significant other does not.

Your significant other doesn’t have to workout with you, they don’t have to have any desire to ever join you at the gym. But a common question we get asked is “How do I get my significant other involved in my health and fitness goals?”

Your significant other may have zero interest in joining you at the gym, but we hope that at the very least they are supportive of your health and fitness goals. Your journey is not impossible without their support, but it is easier to succeed if they are supportive of you.

We want to help you achieve your long term goals. We are here to help you get more support at home and maybe even turn your significant other into an at-home accountability partner! Here are some ideas of where to start to get your significant other on board with your goals.

Communicate
Yes. You are going to have to talk to each other. Let’s be honest. Many of us have tried many different things to improve our health and fitness and/or lose weight. Many of those things are quick fixes that yield short term results and then a return of old habits.

Share with your significant other that you are taking an honest long term approach and fill them in on your short and long term goals, your WHY for wanting to participate in a nutrition or fitness coaching program, where your significant other fits into this plan, and the details of your program.

Let them know that you have enlisted the help of an expert nutrition and/or fitness coach to help you stay on track and that this is different from other strategies previously employed.

The Shared List
Your significant other may not be ready for changing their eating or exercise habits right away. Acknowledge that this is their choice and that is OK. But, with being aware of your goals, you can keep communication lines open and start to come up with a shared workout schedule and things like the grocery list.

What are some things you can do together, like going for walks, or giving you the time in the schedule to get to the gym for your workout? What foods they want, what are foods that you want, and a challenge – what are a few healthy foods on your meal plan that you both want?

Find One Thing
Your significant other may not be ready to dive into things like going for runs or meal prep. That’s OK. Share your fitness and meal plans with them. Challenge them to find just one activity and recipe that sounds amazing.

Give It Time
Be consistent with whatever activity you choose. Be consistent with making your chosen recipe along with a few others to make some easy meals for yourself. You may find that your significant other might start to eat more of your meal prepped items and want to be more active with you!

Your significant other might start to incorporate more movement and more real foods in their diet. They may also realize that health and fitness can also be more enjoyable, and you might gain an accountability partner!

Be Persistent
Continue to share your successes and goals. As you start to get some results, share these with your significant other. Communicate how their support is helping to achieve those results and share what healthy habits you are working on to keep those results coming.
