Tell us a little bit about yourself.
Hi, I’m Andy. I’m a Madison native and I live on the North side near Warner park. I’m a big sports fan! In my free time I love being outside with my wife and our dog, walking, hiking, or getting on the lakes somehow. I also love to cook.
Why did you choose Recursive?
I used to ride past Recursive on the bike path to work and sometimes saw people training. After reading through reviews, it sounded like a very welcoming and inclusive place to work out. Turns out that is true!
What is your favorite thing about working out at Recursive?
So far, the variety! My biggest hurdle traditionally has been planning workouts, and Recursive fills that need for sure. In the workouts I have been in, everyone’s just rooting for everyone else to succeed. It helps push you.
What was the biggest struggle you’ve had the last few months?
While I have done a fair amount of weight training for sports in the past, I’ve been outta the game for the last few years. It has felt like I’m starting brand new again and it can be a little humbling, but the coaches always have good suggestions to modify. Gotta (re)start somewhere.
What is your biggest accomplishment since starting your commitment to a lifestyle change?
Just continuing to show up! I am fortunate in that I work from home and have a flexible schedule, and I have been able to prioritize making workouts fit into my schedule. If I can keep showing up I know I’ll move towards my goals.
How has Recursive changed your life?
Well, I sweat a lot more each week, and I’m in turn drinking a lot more water to take care. Since I started at Recursive I’ve felt more energized during the day, and I’ve been reenergized to cook healthy meals more often vs. takeout. Seems like win-win changes so far.
What advice do you have for people who are nervous to get started?
Wherever you are fitness wise when you start, that’s OK. Treat yourself with compassion, and celebrate even small victories (like for me, just showing up). There are no dumb questions for coaches. Be patient with yourself, get comfortable with the movements at comfortable weights, and decide to scale up when you’re ready.
What is something else fun you’d like to share about yourself?
I found out I really enjoy box jumps. To each their own, right? Also, I like riding my bike long distances and have a few 100 mile rides scheduled this year.
