James began a lifelong pursuit of fitness on the Mississippi River when he learned to row twenty-five years ago. Since then, he has trained off and on to compete in regattas around the United States, Canada, and Europe.

James started taking CrossFit classes in 2017 at I/O Fit in Cleveland Heights, Ohio, while he was working on his doctoral degree at Case Western Reserve University. After graduating in 2019, he moved to Madison to work at the Chazen Museum of Art, and he joined CrossFit Recursive.

Here, James has continued developing weightlifting and gymnastics skills, working especially hard on deadlifts, cleans, kipping pull-ups, and toes-to-bar. He has also taken advantage of Recursive’s nutrition coaching, optimizing his diet to shed extra pounds and improve his performance in the gym, on the water, and in everyday life.

When he is not at CrossFit Recursive, James can be found at the Mendota Rowing Club, biking the Menona Lake Loop, or shopping for fresh fruit and vegetables at the Dane County Farmers’ Market.

His favorite season is summer when he can bake blueberry pies and plum cake. James loves birds and lives with three small parrots named after characters in the Sci-Fi TV series “Battlestar Galactica.”
