We met Rachel way back in the spring of 2016 when we ran our first 6 Week Challenge. I remember her coming in to the gym – she had her newborn son and I had our giant dog Edrick. All Edrick wanted to do was lick that cute baby – and Rachel was cool enough to let him (and she even let me hold her baby that day!) When Rachel went to classes during those 6 weeks, I would take her baby (Sam) up to my office and we would hang out together so his mom could have some time with other adults and she could get a good workout in.

Why did you choose Recursive?
I was new to the area and a new mom that had fallen away from CrossFit for nearly a year, due to two cross state moves and a pregnancy. I found an advertisement for the women’s group that was intended to get mom’s back in the gym. I met with Nikole and I was hooked immediately.

What is your favorite thing about working out at Recursive?
The people. This is truly a community and everyone is so kind.

What was the biggest struggle you’ve had the last few months?
I have a lot of guilt coming back to the gym, even though my mental health was slipping when I wasn’t coming. I am not a work out at home kind of person. Home is my sanctuary of comfy clothes and rest. I had to find a way to forgive myself for finding the balance between safety and health, physical and mental. It is being done right here, and I appreciate those that come are respectful of space and safety.

What is your biggest accomplishment in the last month?
Finding my way back to the gym and finding the balance that makes me feel comfortable.

How has Recursive changed your life?
It gave me a place that was always welcoming and not judgmental of my crazy schedule that creates my sporadic appearances to class.

What advice do you have for people who are nervous to get started?
Don’t worry about the possibility of failure, worry about the opportunities missed if you don’t even try. Recursive has the most welcoming community of people. This is the perfect place to try something new and feel completely supported.

What is something else fun you’d like to share about yourself?
Oh man I have a few!  But my two favorites are 1. I worked at Disney World for a semester. 2. I did a summer program for two years that involved work on a research vessel in the gulf of Mexico, upon which I caught a 5 ft tiger shark
