Tell us a little bit about yourself
I’m a software developer in Madison and I’ve lived here for almost my entire life, except studying abroad. I’m very talkative and I’m also a bit of a goof/doofus.
Why did you choose Recursive?
In early 2021, my friend Mike (previously featured in Member Stories!) and I decided we wanted to join a CrossFit gym, since we were both frustrated with being out of shape, and since Mike’s brother had had a good experience with CrossFit in New York. We chose Recursive specifically because of the downtown location.
What is your favorite thing about working out at Recursive?
My favorite thing about Recursive is how being pushed and encouraged by others makes me work way harder than I am able to do on my own, especially the endurance/metcon part. In the abstract I want to work hard, but CrossFit makes me actually do it.
What was the biggest struggle you’ve had the last few months?
I was frustrated with my inability to do pull ups or rope climbs my first two months or so at Recursive. Weight bearing exercises were difficult for me after pandemic weight gain. I can do rope climbs and a single kipping pull up now, though!
What is your biggest accomplishment since starting your commitment to a lifestyle change?
I’ve achieved a level of consistency in working out that I haven’t had since I ran cross country in high school. I really make an effort to get to all 15 classes per month.
How has Recursive changed your life?
Recursive has removed the mental block I had against working out. I look forward to the workouts and don’t have any trouble motivating myself to go to the gym. I also generally feel healthier than I did before I joined Recursive.
What advice do you have for people who are nervous to get started?
I’d advise people that in your first few weeks, it’s okay if you can’t get through whole WODs at a steady pace, and it’s okay if you get super sore afterwards. It’s amazing how quickly the body can adapt. Also, once you get a sense of how to scale your workouts, it gets easier to put in a steady effort.
What is something else fun you’d like to share about yourself?
I’m doing my first CrossFit competition in October on team “The Grateful Deadlifts.”
